Winds, trees and symphonies | Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

BIG-poetry2017-06Jun

I hear the wind among the trees

Playing the celestial symphonies;

I see the branches downward bent,

Like keys of some great instrument.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882)

Only God can make a tree | Joyce Kilmer

BIG-poetry2017-05May

I think that I shall never see

A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest

Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day

And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in Summer wear

A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;

Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,

But only God can make a tree.

Joyce Kilmer (1886-1918)

Long live the wilderness! | Gerard Hopkins

BIG-poetry2017-04Apr

What would the world be, once bereft

Of wet and of wildness? Let them be left,

O let them be left, wildness and wet;

Long live the weeds and the wilderness yet.

Gerard Hopkins (1844–1889)

Don’t invite your end | Ralph Waldo Emerson

Who leaves the pine-tree, leaves his friend,

Unnerves his strength, invites his end.

A massacre of dreams | John Drinkwater

BIG-poetry2017-02Feb

When you defile the pleasant streams

And the wild bird’s abiding place,

You massacre a million dreams

And cast your spittle in God’s face.

John Drinkwater (1882-1937)

Golden daffodils | William Wordsworth

BIG-poetry2017-12Dec

I wandered lonely as a cloud

That floats on high o’er vales and hills,

When all at once I saw a crowd,

A host, of golden daffodils;

Beside the lake, beneath the trees,

Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

William Wordsworth (1770-1850)
